P.A. Adolph (Subbutteo) - ADO-040-1 / Famous Footballers ~ A Series of 50

ADO-040-1 / Famous Footballers ~ A Series of 50
P.A. Adolph (Subbutteo)
50 cards

This is the ultra rare set, which combines the two sets of 24 cards and adds two more to bring the set up to 50 cards. I presume that this set was issued first, before a decision was made to cut the collection down to two smaller sets. The other sets are similar to other cards issued in the 1950s, whereas this set is contains photographic cards, more akin to some of those issued in the 1920s and the cards are slightly larger and shown a little more of the original picture on each card. I'd like to thank both Garry Daynes at Football Card Collector Magazine and  Neil Goulding for their help with this checklist. Card no. 21 (Sydeny Normanton of Bury) and card no. 50 (Ron Wylie of Notts County - shown above) are the two additional cards that turn two sets of 24 cards into one set of 50.

  1. Just wondering why some cards say "A Series of 24" on the back and others say "A Series of 50"?

    1. Hi Paul,

This set is the much rarer version, photographic cards similar to the ones given away in the comics in the 1920's, whereas the two sets of 24 cards are similar to all the other cards issued with comics in the 1950's. Put the two versions of one card side by side and the difference is very noticable.
